FashionSpeak - Detroit Garment Group - Event Photography by Christian O'Grady

FYT had the opportunity, this year, to be the official photographers and sponsors for the business-education event FashionSpeak. FashionSpeak brings together many different sides of the fashion industry together to help keep Michigan's fashion industry in Michigan. The conference was held at One Woodward in Detroit, with keynote speaker and native Detroiter, designer Kevan Hall.

Aside from the unique fashion pieces present at the event, there were a lot of interesting textures and interiors within the venue which made for nice backgrounds when shooting. Not to mention the entire third floor was wrapped in windows from the floor to the ceiling - allowing natural light to pour in during the first half of our day.

Thanks Karen Buscemi for being a great leader in Detroit!

Focus Your Talent - Portrait Session - Alchemy Thomas by Christian O'Grady

Recently Christian took some time to work with the head turning Alchemy Thomas. During the adventure through Pontiac Christian photographed Alchemy in a variety of spots. Christian as he walks through a space is always looking for "good" light, meaning light that will offer a way to make an interesting photo.

Shooting directly into a light source you can create lens flare. Sometimes this is a problem, but in this case it adds an interesting element to the photograph.

Pontiac is a wonderful place for a photographer to shoot. There are tons of angles with clean backgrounds and amazing textures.

Light coming at the camera through leaves of a tree makes for excellent bokeh. Bokeh is the out of focus light in the background which forms little circles and it makes a great look for a photograph.

When you have a backlit subject you can take advantage of shapes with a silhouette. Pay attention to the overall shapes and remember that you won't all the detail that your eye can see because the dynamic range of a camera is much less than the human eye.

The top deck of the Phoenix center is a favorite spot in the Pontiac area.

Rather than doing a silhouette in this case with similar lighting Christian decided to expose the photo so you can see the colors in the sky but still kept detail in the subject. This takes some computer work to bring out the colors of the highlights and the tones in the shadows.

As you work with a subject they begin to loosen up and that's when you can ask them to do something like lay across a staircase.

If you turn yourself all the way around and look at the light on the subject rather than the sunset  you can capture a nice soft light for your photograph.

Commercial Fashion - CRAINE&LOVE - Esii Perez by Christian O'Grady

This past week FYT got to shoot with some of their favorites: CRAINE&LOVE and model Esii Perez.  CRAINE&LOVE is a clothing brand centered towards producing basic and essential pieces for women and men.

Christian and Victoria have been working alongside owner Carol Craine for several months watching new ideas and inspirations come into play while she experiments with new fabrics and patterns.  For our latest shoot we welcomed long time friend Esii, who Christian says is the most dynamic model he has worked with, to model.

Her form was as versatile as the pieces themselves.  Each style was photographed on Esii to represent the uniform standing on it's own.  Then combinations of clothing we're thrown into the mix such as jeans, skirts and sweaters tied around the waist and shoulders, all to show the different personas that each of the designers pieces can take on.

Your uniform, how you define it, how you wear it.

Whether a night out for dinner or jet-setting cross country, the style and simplicity of each piece is tailored to your true self.  FYT is excited to be on this journey with Carol as she explores new opportunities for her brand.  We look forward to seeing our images implemented.

FYT and CRAINE&LOVE plan to produce a video at the end of the month to showcase the different styles of the brand and how the form and functionality play's a crucial role in each piece.

Esii Perez - Studio Photography - FYT Productions by Christian O'Grady

Esii Perez is a favorite model of FYT. Esii has no bounds, restrictions, or hesitations. She comes to the studio EARLY every time with a bright positive attitude. Christian and Esii have been shooting together since the beginning of this decade and that experience together leads to organic moments captured. Esii has a willingness to try different poses and expressions. This blog post of photos were all taken within one shooting session and all of these photos have little or no retouching. Forget Your Troubles... come shoot with FYT.

Product Photography - CRAINE&LOVE - FYT Productions by Christian O'Grady

CRAINE&LOVE is a local clothing company we have had the pleasure of working with previously.  The brand is centered towards producing basic and essential pieces for both men and women. Working alongside Carol Craine, the woman behind CRAINE&LOVE, you truly get to see the creative mind at work - the constant stream of ideas, inspiration, and willingness to take risks.  When I was talking with Carol during our shoot, I mentioned to her that when I wear her pieces I am told I look "striking," or "simply sexy" and I agree with them confirming that these pieces are nothing but basic, they are empowering.  Carol's idea for her pieces stemmed from her desire to find balance in her life.  She writes, "I SEEK TO FIND THE BALANCE, THE BEAUTY, AND THE SIMPLICITY.... IN ALL I DO... IN ALL I SHARE... IN ALL I WEAR... "  And just like that, Carol's beloved uniform was brought to fruition.

Our shoot consisted of working on Carol's web content shooting each of her pieces on white, hanging from unique metal hangers.  After wrapping that up, we decided to mix it up a bit and execute one of Carol's idea's to have the clothing to be portrayed in a more relaxed, lifestyle fit.  So, I jumped in and got to model some different styles.

Editorial - SUGARPOP! - The Metropolitan d'Etroit Magazine by Christian O'Grady

Spring is here!  Time to celebrate the best way we know how...with something SWEET.  This warm weather calls for cold fizzy pop, sweet sherbet, and other sugary treats that bring out fun under the warm sun.  The SUGARPOP! shoot was inspired by the personalities of beautiful girls and their silly personalities.  The candy element was added to be both bold and vibrant, combined with the makeup enhanced the sweetness and colorfulness of the shoot.

Studio Portraiture - Sarah Sadovsky - Red Hair Beauty by Christian O'Grady

Sarah has a beauty that runs deep.  Christian and I have gotten to know all the quirky and unique things that make Sarah who she is, and it only makes her more desirable to those who know her.  During my shoot with Sarah, I wanted to focus on her long (and strong!) red hair in certain ways.  Being a red head is something that Sarah wears proudly, because it makes her different.  I am looking forward to working with Sarah in the future to reveal more of her inner beauty.

I shot this with one main light overhead softbox right with my lovely partner Christian lending a helping hand to fan Sarah's hair when needed.

Studio Portraiture - Madalyn Knebel - FYT Productions by Christian O'Grady

I, Victoria, have always wanted to photograph a ballerina.  The way they carry themselves with such elegance has always been attractive to me.  Upon meeting Madalyn, I knew of her history with ballet but what I didn't know was that she was still graceful as ever.  Sometimes people change, whether it's due to their environment or just the mere fact that they've moved onto that next step.  This was not the case, I knew I had to photograph Madalyn's soft and sweet nature.  During our shoot together, Christian was flying the Helix around our studio getting behind the scenes footage to help tell the story.

Studio Portraiture - Trevor & Bayley - FYT Productions by Christian O'Grady

Trevor and Bayley, model friends of ours #PowerCouple stayed with us in our loft this summer as they were making a transition in their modeling career. After spending a couple years in China they moved to Michigan in preparation for a move to the city of Chicago. We decided to do an old school CK inspired black and white shoot with them in studio. #FYT

Fashion Editorial - StylineLine Magazine - Airtime Trampoline Park @ Troy, MI by Christian O'Grady

Victoria's first chance to work with me on a big job was during this 10 page fashion spread for the March issue of Styleline Magazine last year. She shot behind the scenes as I orchestrated the 10 different setups we shot for the magazine. Jumping around all day at Airtime trampoline park made for an extremely fun shooting day.

Studio Projection Art - Cassie Keller - FYT Productions by Christian O'Grady

We had worked with Cassie before but on this shoot Victoria and I decided to have fun experimenting with light from a projector. We like to shoot a model from two points of view at the same time. It gives us an opportunity to get some more dynamic photographs.

Studio Portraiture - Carmen Johnson - FYT Productions by Christian O'Grady

Christian and I had the privilege of working with Carmen just recently when she was in town from Los Angeles visiting family for the holidays.  She is so natural in front of the camera she made our job very easy. Christian put together two different lighting setups in studio and we shared the same lighting but took on different angles to achieve varied looks. For the last look we went outside to a nearby club parking lot and shot with a makeshift lighting rig fashioned from an old photographers light strip with new tungsten LED bulbs. Then we white balanced the Canon 5D Mark III to tungsten to really bring out the blue in the background. #FYT
